Green thumb or sore thumb?

So I figured it would be nice to have my own supply of herbs at home from which I could snip when I'm doing one of my little experiments in the kitchen. My mom already had a nice big pot of basil so I moved her closer to her new friends with the pretty names (parsley, rosemary, coriander and dill) to help make them feel welcome in their new home and so they could start a little scarborough fair of their own.

So here they are, I'm transferring them to clay pots this weekend.

My sister wants to give me some seeds that she's had for a while now. But I've never actually grown anything before except for that monggo (mung bean) seed in 6th grade for Home Ec class. But I'll give it a shot. I don't know anything about growing and taking care of herbs, so I'm a little nervous. Please, if any of you have any tips, I would love to hear it and I would be forever grateful!

I'm crossing my fingers that some of my dad's green thumb genes were passed on to me. (He actually grew grapes in the heart of Makati before). Hopefully if this works out and I have a garden of my own someday I could actually pick my own produce from my backyard. How nice that would be! Delusions of grandeur maybe? Let's hope not! :)

That's me, the helmet head, and my sis under my dad's grapevine
PS: I found this website when I was looking for information online. It's got some pretty neat info about the herbs commonly used in cooking.

I've always wanted to have a garden where I can grow herbs and vegetables - that would be so awesome! Someday, when we have a house or even a little plot of dirt outside. :)

Good luck with your garden, I look foward to seeing you use your herbs when cooking.

Nena, did you ask Charley yesterday about your herbs? I enjoyed making homemade tarragon tea from the loot I got yesterday at the farm. Will infuse some of the rosemary into some of the olive oil and balsamic vinegar at home, and also make some massage oil with it.

The only thing I ever grew was basil and that soon died on me. I just remember to get a bushy basil plant, keep pinching the new shoots so they grow forth and multiply. Hope that helps!

Hi Nens! Nice looking herbs you've got there! I'm crossing all my fingers and toes for you :) Although I'm sure you will give them the care they need. I would love to have a herb plot of my own...keep me posted on their development! :)

Mila, good call on the rosemary! I think I'll infuse some olive oil with some of my loot :)

Hi Ari, me too! herbs, vegetable and fruit garden, that's what I want more than a flower garden - though that's nice too. Thank you for the wishes of luck, I think I need it. :)

Mila, I didn't get to ask her. Didn't really wanna bother her too much about it. I agree with Jo, great idea with the fresh rosemary! I know what you mean about the basil, I had a little pot of my own in London kitchen before. It didn't last long but at least I got to use it quite often. Thanks so much for the tip! :)

Thanks Jo! Keep them crossed please. My dad got me a long planter for them today. So I have my work cut out for me. :)

The only herbs I have growing on my kitchen window sill are Thai basil and bay leaf. The rest I buy as needed because they tend to die indoors.:)

I'm sure the basil pot makes your kitchen smell great. This one is so fragrant!
